New Soludina™ LCD Panels Adopt New Wide Viewing Angle Technology for Smartphones, Tablet-type Devices and other Mobile Products

Toshiba Mobile Display Co., Ltd. (President: Masahiko Fukakushi) has developed Soludina™, a new wide viewing angle technology for liquid crystal display (LCD) panels. Two panels, a 4.3-inch and a 7.0-inch, will be in volume production by the end of this fiscal year, and the line-up will be expanded in the future.

In recent years, smartphones and tablet-type devices have been rapidly dominating the mobile phone market. These products have display screens that are more intuitive and feature sophisticated operating systems which utilize advanced telecommunications facilities that provide a large-volume, high-throughput communications infrastructure. Smartphones and tablet-type devices deliver clear and crisp representation of large amounts of information with larger display screen sizes and higher resolutions, and are therefore required to provide sharp display screen images with finer resolution throughout a wide angle of view on these larger screen sizes.

The newly-developed Soludina™ LCD panels adopt a new display mode that uses a pixel configuration suitable for high-definition displays and is able to reproduce sharp images across a wide range of extended viewing angles. The new technology ensures accurate color reproduction over a wide range of viewing angles, which is essential for smartphones, tablet-type devices and other mobile information terminals.

The Soludina™ high-definition LCD is best suited for smartphones and other mobile information devices when combined with Toshiba’s low-temperature poly-silicon (LTPS) thin-film transistor (TFT) technology, which is suitable for high resolution applications. When combined with our proprietary Screen Fit® technology, this combination of Soludina™ and LTPS results in an LCD panel that not only offers superior images across a wider viewing angle, but is also thinner and weighs less.

This technology will be exhibited at the TMD booth #3601 in the FPD International 2011 exhibition, to be held in Pacifico Yokohama from October 26 to 28, 2011.
