| Toshiba Matsushita Display Technology Co., Ltd. (TMD) will start assembling liquid crystal display (LCD) modules, beginning the end of November 2002, in an industrial park in the city of Dong Guan, People's Republic of China (PRC), based on an outsourcing agreement with Shintech Engineering, Ltd. (Shintech Engineering), an affiliated company of Mitsui & Co. (Mitsui) and Aichi Denko K.K. The People's Republic of China has become the world's largest center for the assembly of mobile phone products, and the country is also accepting the accelerated shift in fabrication of personal computers (PC) and monitor displays from Taiwan. In recognition of these trends, TMD has established a new system to ensure higher efficiency based on the Mitsui's know-how in strategic logistics, aiming primarily to further refine customer services and reduce product costs. The LCD module assembly site in China consists of lines newly constructed by Mitsui and Shintech Engineering for TMD. The operation will initially revolve around the assembling of LCD modules for mobile phones. In the future, additional lines will be introduced for PC and monitor displays, targeting monthly production of 600Kp and 150Kp, respectively, for PC and monitor displays in March 2003. Operations at the site are intended to increase TMD’s cost competitiveness, in response to pricing pressure from customers, by aggressively promoting local procurement and assembling knockdown module kits in addition to reducing assembling costs. TMD is determined to continue to meet varying customer needs for price, technological innovation, quality and supply in the TFT LCD market, which is expected to expand at an average annual growth rate of 15 to 20 percent (based on market analysis by DisplaySearch) ,and will further improve superiority in the market through TMD’s aggressive expansion of businesses.
