Toshiba Matsushita Display Technology Co., Ltd. (TMD) has developed a transflective low-temperature poly-silicon (LTPS) liquid crystal display (LCD) panel, which achieves the industry’s highest VGA resolution (640 x 480 pixels) in 3.5-inch size TFT LCD panels. TMD plans to start mass production of the newly developed LCD panel in April 2003.

The newly developed panel features VGA resolution, which will significantly expand applications, in a 3.5-inch compact size. The higher density and higher resolution, using a pixel pitch of 0.111mm (equating to 229 pixels per inch) can realize higher definition images with the quality of printed material and smooth character representation. This ability to exhibit high quality image content is considered essential for next-generation mobile products. In addition, the adoption of a transflective liquid crystal design assures higher quality display performance in both indoor and outdoor usage.

The LTPS TFT LCD features higher electron mobility that enables direct formation of the primary peripheral circuits on the glass substrate for control of the LCD screen, compared to amorphous (non-crystalline) silicon LCD displays. LTPS technology has enabled a significant reduction in the number of connecting pins in the new 3.5-inch display, leading to improved reliability, and enabling finer pixel pitch which leads to higher density and higher definition display screen images.

The newly developed display is the fourth such high-density and high-resolution (above 200ppi class) LTPS TFT module for TMD, following 4.0-inch VGA, 6.3-inch XGA and 10.4-inch UXGA developments. TMD plans to continue to increase their high-resolution product lineup.

The newly developed LTPS LCD panel will be exhibited at CEATEC JAPAN 2002 at the Makuhari Messe International Convention Complex, Chiba Prefecture, Japan, opening October 1, 2002.
