Toshiba Matsushita Display Technology Co.,Ltd. (TMD) has developed the world's first input display with new concepts, by which direct scanning (image capture) from TFT LCD display is possible as the realization product of SOG(System On Glass) technology - unique to p-Si TFT-LCD, and they will be displayed at EDEX2003 in Tokyo Big Site from April 9.
In addition to usual view functions, the low temperature p-Si TFT-LCD with 8.9cm(3.5”) QVGA diagonal has input function which is able to capture data up to very high image quality 960x240 pixels when a printed matter/picture one would like to image-capture is touched on the screen itself, and enables application of save or redisplay command.
It was realized that the light sensor element is made from the liquid crystal pixel, without the trouble with data capturing from another gadget and expected not only for business use but also off-work.
It allows various applications, such as scanning a catalog, selecting a product by reading a bar code for online shopping, access control by password, saving in PC by easy authorization from palm pattern as private data/images, and calling up an original stored bypass map from car navigation.
Regarding the low temperature p-Si TFT-LCD as core technology, TMD has pursued SOG strategy - at first, integrating driver LSI, parts of driving peripheral circuitry, memory function into pixels, and this time the innovative production sample of input function.
In the future, by applying for the characteristics of taking an object in real size unlike a camera and improving software or resolution, TMD will carry out research and development for realization of the advanced fingerprint authentication covering EC business and financial transaction in which strict security is necessary.
