Toshiba Matsushita Display Technology Co., Ltd. (TMD) today announced that it would direct an additional investment of 8- billion yen into expanding production of high-resolution color display panels for mobile phones. The new funding is in addition to investments made by the company in the second half of fical year 2002, and the company’s already announced investment plans. The combined impact of the overall investment program will give Toshiba Matsushita Display Technology Company a production capacity equivalent to 5-million 2-inch display panels a month in FY 2004. Mobile phones with high-resolution color displays first appeared in the Japanese market, but are now starting to make inroads into the Korean, Chinese, European and American markets. Forecasts for 2003 indicate demand for 90-million TFT LCDs and 100-million color STN LCDs, bringing the percentage of color units to approximately 45% of all mobile telephones in use in the global market. In 2004 and beyond, the percentage of TFT displays is expected to climb even higher. In Japan, continuing progress is expected to stimulate a rapid increase in demand for QVGA and other high-resolution displays in the years following 2003. On the supply side, the industry as a whole should be ready to meet this anticipated growth in demand. TMD’s investment decision is based on its analysis of market expansion. The latest investment will be primarily directed to remodeling part of the company’s Fukaya Operations and its existing production line, including a part of the pre-process line. Through the investment and enhanced marketing, TMD will make a concerted effort to achieve 50% of the world market for mobile telephone TFTs. The latest investment will support a production ramp up scheduled for this October. |
