New Industrial-use LCD Panel with the Highest Impact Strength in the Industry

New Development will Satisfy the Need for Durability in LCD Panels
 

Toshiba Matsushita Display Technology Co., Ltd. (TMD) has developed an 8.4-inch SVGA (800 x 600 pixel resolution) industrial-use thin film transistor (TFT) liquid crystal display (LCD) panel featuring significantly enhanced anti-shock property as well as improved image quality, utilizing the characteristics of low temperature poly-silicon (LTPS) which allows integration of semiconductor circuitry and other systems onto the glass substrate (known as System On Glass (SOG) technology).

In this panel, conventionally external-mounted LCD driver IC is integrated onto the glass substrate, based on SOG technology. This contributes to a significant decrease in the chance of damaging panels due to the severance of the interconnections between the LCD panel and the driver ICs, which are most susceptible to physical shock.

The required number of connections has been reduced to 200, which is 1/15th the previous 3,000 connections required in similar industrial-use LCD panels using amorphous silicon. In addition, design improvements in the backlight unit have contributed to attain an impact strength of 700G (note 1), thereby making the newly developed LCD panel approximately 10 times stronger than our existing models.

This product is among the strongest LCD modules available, and will be recognized as a promising display unit for transfer and transport systems, which generally have not installed LCD panels to date due to the severe operating conditions inherent in this application. The newly developed module will be exhibited at FPD International to be held at Pacific Convention Plaza (PACIFICO) Yokohama, Kanagawa Prefecture, Japan from October 29 (Wed.) to 31 (Fri.), 2003. 

(note 1) The module is resistant to an impact load that is 700 times its own weight (approx. 250 kg)
