for Mobile Phone Application

Tokyo, Japan -- Toshiba Matsushita Display Technology Co., Ltd. (TMD*), the leading manufacturer of TFT LCD modules for mobile applications, today announced a low-temperature polysilicon (LTPS) TFT LCD display with VGA (480x640) and QVGA (240x320) resolution capability within the single LCD panel. The display technology provides design engineers with the ability to freely choose which display resolution can be operated to best suit the intended usage. TMD will exhibit this new display in the Toshiba Corporation booth, #C38 of Hall 8 at CEATEC Japan 2005, October 4-8 in Makuhari Messe, Chiba, Japan. TMD will also exhibit the panel in booth, #205, at FPD International 2005, October 19-21 in Pacifico Yokohama, Kanagawa, Japan.

One of the company’s strategic efforts has been to take advantage of the inherent characteristics and benefits of LTPS technology. TMD has previously commercialized the world’s first QVGA-resolution LCDs for mobile phone applications and is a leading supplier in this field. Immediately afterwards TMD embarked on the development of a display with even higher VGA resolution for mobile phone applications. Now TMD has successfully developed this display, which is capable of displaying both the ultra-high VGA resolution and the conventional QVGA resolution within the same single LCD panel. This new product also utilizes TMD’s unique system on glass (SOG) technology. 

By optimizing our unique LCD driving technology, which enables faster response and lower power consumption, TMD realized an average forty (40) percent faster response speed, and lower power consumption, when compared with our existing LTPS QVGA TFT LCDs for mobile phone applications. We anticipate a high demand from customers with novel design ideas that require superior viewing resolutions for motion pictures and TV programs which require faster response, wider viewing angle and higher contrast.
