Toshiba Matsushita Display Announces 
World’s First LTPS TFT LCD with LED-based Backlight System 
for Mobile Notebook PC Applications

New 11.1-inch Wide-Format, 2.75mm Thick, Lightweight TFT LCD is Suitable 
for High-Quality DVD and TV Content

Tokyo, Japan -- Toshiba Matsushita Display Technology Co., Ltd. (TMDisplay*), the leading manufacturer of thin-film transistor (TFT) LCD modules for mobile applications, announced mass production of an 11.1-inch wide-format low-temperature polysilicon (LTPS) TFT LCD for notebook PC applications using a new light emitting diode (LED) backlighting system. This approach results in a module with thickness of just 2.75mm (at the thickest part), one half the thickness as compared to existing modules with cold cathode fluorescent lamp (CCFL) backlighting systems. TMDisplay will exhibit the prototype in booth #205, at FPD International 2005, October 19-21 in Pacifico Yokohama, Kanagawa, Japan.
　
One of the company’s strategic efforts has been to take advantage of the characteristics of LTPS and other leading-edge technologies. We can achieve a very flat LCD display structure by 1) integrating the LCD driving circuits directly on the surface of the LCD glass; 2) adapting a thinner LED-based backlighting system; 3) positioning the printed circuit board (PCB) adjacent to the glass rather than on the backside of the LCD display module; and 4) utilizing glass polishing techniques. Altogether, this approach realizes an extremely thin and lightweight structure compared with displays using existing CCFL-based backlighting systems without compromising optical performance requirements. 

This new LCD can fully display DVD movies and TV program and motion picture content with high image quality which is desirable in notebook PCs for home use with a built-in DVD player and/or TV tuner. Mobile notebook PCs, which are designed to be used anytime and anywhere, are becoming increasingly popular. TMDisplay is responding by planning to complete a lineup of extremely thin, lightweight, and low power displays especially designed to support the performance requirements of mobile PC applications.
